Sales tax
Charge sales tax, including different rates on one invoice
Set your standard rate once, and choose a different rate (or none) for any item.
Set your usual rate in Settings › Company, for example 8.875. New invoices start with it as the standard rate.
Each item has a Tax choice: No tax, Standard rate, one of your saved rates, or Different rate… to type a rate just for that item. Rates can have up to three decimals.
Saved rates, agencies and combined rates
In Sales Tax › Tax rates, name the rates you charge (like “NY State 4%” or “GST 5%”) and who you file each with. Charging two taxes on the same item, like GST and PST? Add both, then Add a combined rate from them: pick it on the item, and the invoice shows each tax on its own line. Give a product its usual rate in Products & services and it fills in when you pick the product.
A saved rate's percentage can't change, so old invoices always report the same way. When a rate changes, add the new one and archive the old.
When an invoice uses more than one rate, the totals show the tax at each rate, and so does the invoice your customer sees.
Items on the standard rate follow it: change the rate at the bottom of the invoice and they all update.
